The Carton Excellence Awards 2018 returns to reward creative and sustainable packaging designs

Pro Carton and the European Carton Makers Associations (ECMA) – associations that represent the European supply chain of cardboard packaging – are calling on brands to send their creative and sustainable packaging designs in a bid to recognize and reward More innovative cardboard packaging concepts. The Carton Excellence Awards are recognized as the most prestigious awards granted in Europe within the world of packaging, and pay tribute to the efforts made by the FMCG brands to reaffirm their commitment to the use of sustainable materials, in addition to the adoption of innovation In the design.

With the debate on packaging waste occupying newspaper headlines every day across Europe, and as brands increasingly turn to sustainable materials to help reduce waste and thus prevent the progressive deterioration of the environment, it is not a surprise that cardboard packaging is gaining a growing number of followers throughout the world. For more than 20 years, the Awards have offered their recognition to those brands that adopt cardboard packaging, rewarding authentic sustainability in design thanks to the renewable, compostable and recyclable qualities of the material.

With nine different categories and the ultimate honor of receiving the Carton of the Year award, brands are invited to send their packaging designs for consideration. All registrations must have been available in the European market in the last three years, and registrations are accepted from across the supply chain, inviting card converters, designers, brand owners and retailers to send their products. The 2018 edition has as a novelty a revision of the categories, in order to better reflect the distribution of the market: To the usual categories – Dehydrated foods and beverages (including tea, coffee, soft drinks, beer and wine), Cold and frozen foods, Fast and precooked food (including paper cups), Confectionery, Luxury items (including spirits and wines, beauty and gifts), Health and pharmaceutical care and non-food products – these two categories are joined this year: the prize Save the planet , which rewards those packaging designs that have contributed significantly to helping the environment, and the category Innovative material, for substrates based on cardboard or paper of new development. By way of return in 2018, consumers will be invited to vote for their favorite packaging concept in the Audience Award.

The winners of the 2017 awards included L’OR of JDE, Davidoff, HAL Allergy Group and LIQ, while Geometrie Cividât of Domenis1898 won the Carton of the Year, the definitive award for the best packaging of the year. Among the finalists were many famous brands; among them, Lipton, Nestle, Johnnie Walker, Stoli, Findus, Domino’s and the British retailer Sainsbury’s.
